Last weekend I was invited to London to sample the new Piccolo menu that Pizza Express have created for your own little Piccolos!

Pizza Express is a place that I have never taken the children to eat before, so it was interesting to find out first hand how they cater for little people. First up, we heard how Pizza Express has got the Children’s Food Trust to team up with them and help them create the new Piccolo menu. They explained how they have looked long and hard at the contents of the menu, and made some positive changes. They want children to get excited about the food they are eating, and get them involved. This really shines through with the new menu.

The Menu is all included in a sleek looking mini-magazine, which not only has the interactive menu inside, but some very cool colouring and drawing activities to keep them amused while they wait for their food.

Children can now ‘create their own’, which gives them the freedom to make something special that they will want to eat. The photos for the ingredients have even been shot so that the healthy options, such as the vegetables, look inviting and tasty. Children can also add as much, or as little as they want of the ingredients for the pizza. There is even great Gluten Free bases, and even a dessert too, which carry Coeliac UK’s NGCI accreditation.

For starters, the much loved Dough Balls automatically come with a fresh salad side of red peppers, santos tomato and cucumber. Although, it might not be what your child picks, the fresh ingredients and having them there with the dip means that they may just give them a try and discover something new they like. You can also choose between the Garlic Butter and the Olive Oil and Balsamic Syrup, a healthy alternative.

For little ones who do not like pizza, there is a choice of pastas. I was surprised to learn that all the sauces for the pasta are created in house, meaning that they even more control over what is included in them.

For desserts, there is fresh fruit included with the Mini Chocolate Fudge Brownie and the Gluten Free Brownie, but you can also request free strawberries if you choose the Piccolo Sundae. There is also a very delicious Raspberry Sorbet, which I had the pleasure of trying myself. It is made entirely of fruit, and I had to ask many many times what else was included, as it tasted SO good. It is smooth and almost creamy, but there is no dairy included in it at all.

Finally, they have also made a great option for children who might not want to eat all three courses. You can choose any Piccolo main for £3.95, which for good quality freshly cooked food, is a great price in my opinion. The three courses is still only £6.50, which again, is a brilliant price for the quality and freshness.

We were really fortunate to get the chance to make our own pizzas, with the help of the Pizzaiolo’s and our very own Piccolo’s!

The children loved creating their own pizza’s, and they tried new things too. Jordan sampled his first ever Olive, which he loved!

Pizza Express have cut salt and sugars in their foods, but haven’t compromised on taste at all. We LOVE the new Piccolo menu, and will be back to take all 4 kids very very soon.

The new Piccolo menu is available now. You can find your nearest Pizza Express online at www.pizzaexpress.com
