Do you need health insurance for the whole family?
Perhaps few subjects have generated such controversy over recent years as that of private family health insurance.
There are specialist health cover providers, (such as Drewberry Health Insurance who can provide private health insurance for the whole family) yet some people are perhaps not entirely sure whether they actually need this protection.
Let’s examine some of the issues.
The public service
If you are unwell and require medical treatment for a serious or critical illness, those services are provided by the excellent National Health Service.
In fact, the NHS also provides a wide range of other healthcare services and they are not limited to only serious or critical conditions.
However, the service needs to prioritise its delivery of medical help and as would most likely always be the case, inevitably some decisions have to be made about relative priorities. It is, therefore, not unknown for some non-urgent conditions to be subject to waiting lists in terms of gaining access to a consultant and eventually the treatment concerned.
It is perhaps fair to say that the majority of people accept this as a fact of life in situations where you have a service where demand is always likely to exceed supply.
A family’s health needs
Although there may be circumstances where a typical family might accept such delays and waiting lists without particular concern, there may be other situations where it may be far less convenient to do so and they might lead to distress and difficulties.
Take, for example, a situation where a child is waiting for perhaps minor treatment but where their condition is, nevertheless, making it difficult for them to focus their full attention on their schooling.
Another hypothetical situation might be where one of the main income providers is finding it difficult to concentrate on their job as they suffer the uncertainties of waiting to see a consultant to understand what can be done and when, about their particular health problem.
In these sorts of situations, a family may appreciate having the ability to choose between waiting for the public service or getting fast access to a consultant and eventual treatment.
Private health cover
This is where private health insurance policies might have a role to play.
They’ll allow a family to decide whether or not to invest in a policy which would, if necessary, allow them to have fast access to the very best medical services in circumstances where their condition might not be critical but was causing them some discomfort or concern.
Such policies might provide not only fast access to consultants and treatment but also the choice of a private room and at a hospital that is convenient for you. It might also be possible to include outpatient treatment under such cover.
There are a range of policies available providing a number of different potential benefits. It might be worth seriously considering this type of protection if you would like to provide your family with the ultimate of choice and flexibility in a situation where misfortune struck in the form of ill health.
