I will openly admit that I was a birthing ball cynic. I have used smiliar for exercise in the gym previously,  but just couldn’t work out why one would be any use for pregnancy or birth. But when I was 34 weeks pregnant with Baby Emma, a simple antenatal appointment turned out to show my baby was back to back. Now I had my first child with his positioning of back to back, and it was horrendous. I turned to Google to research about subsquent babies being back to back, and evidence showed that although a baby could turn in labour, it doesn’t always happen. A back to back baby also increases your chances for assisted delivery, something I was keen to avoid.  I decided I would try anything to get her to turn.  Looking further into how this can work, birthing balls seemed the solution.

Miracle Products came up trumps offering me a Birthing Ball to review. Still a bit cynical, but determined to try anything I cracked the box open. Inside was the ball,  a DVD, instructions, a pump, a stopper and a tool to remove the stopper. They are available in two sizes, as I am a short one at just 5’1, I was sent  the 55cm Gym Ball. For people 5’6” and over, there is a 65cm ball.

Pumping up the ball was easy, I done it myself heavily pregnant. You can then use the ball straight away, however you do need to pump it up again the day after original inflation. My first sit on the ball was one with slight worry I would fall off, but I found it comfortable. In fact, it gave me relief from pain. From that point on, it became my ‘everything chair’. I done everything on it. I sat at the desk on it, I sat watching TV on it. I even bathed the kids sitting on it in the bathroom. I read my toddler stories in his bedroom at bedtime sat on it.

But it wasn’t just for sitting, I also leant over it to help reposition baby. Just a few weeks later I went back to the midwife, and success, baby had turned!  I continued to use the ball, right through to the 42 weeks when I had baby Emma. I even used it in labour.

I honestly wish I had used one for my previous 3 pregnancies. I love the Miracle Ball, I cannot even express just how much, it is my new best friend! I still use it now for post-natal exercises, so the uses will continue for many years. For just £29.99, it is a complete bargain.
