Lelly Kelly have become every little girl’s ‘shoe must haves’ in a very short space of time so how did they do it, what’s new and what is the secret behind those ahem, catchy TV ads?

The brand was launched to an apathetic market in 2005 – highly embellished canvas shoes which at over £30 at the time were definitely not the cheapest on the market. Lelli Kelly is an Italian company, based in Lucca, Italy and after the initial hard sell through they came up with the innovative idea of advertising the collection on children’s television, something that no other children’s shoe brand had done in the UK up to that point.

Never under estimate the power of ‘pester power’ and whilst toy manufacturers had been doing it for years, (who remembers Tracey Island!), No children’s shoe brand had worked the old TV magic, convincing small children round the UK that they ‘needed’ the shoes with free toy and the infectious jingle!

According to Paul Barson, professor of music theory at Penn State university “If you have a hook (a short catchy phrase or passage) in a song, and if that hook is repeated often, that could do it. You might only remember five seconds of the song — but sometimes that’s enough.”

In addition, he noted, repeated radio play (or TV) could force a song to become catchy.
“You could hear a song 25 times a day. If it has a short refrain that everyone can remember, it will stick, even if it’s terrible.” (Source: By Joe Anuta, Research/Penn State)

Well of course everyone knows the Lelli Kelly tune it kind of sticks in your head!, kids love it, adults hate it, just look at the various parodies on Youtube!

But what of the shoes?, are they all they are cracked up to be? ; Nigel Carr MD of online retailer Shoes.co.uk (who sell the shoes on their website), is a fan.

Nigel was the Children’s shoe buyer at Barratt’s shoes for eight years so knows a little about what goes in to making a quality shoe. “The upper material is very important – cheap patent has an ‘orange peel’ effect on the vamp where it is pulled over the toe” whereas Lelli Kelly leather is nice and smooth.

The padded insoles are also made of leather which helps to ‘wick’ away any moisture – this is important to keep your child’s feet dry, especially when they could be wearing the shoes all day. The shoes are available in two fitting as well, which while its not as exact as a traditional fitting brand like Startrite, is far better than most Kids shoe brands these days.

The upcoming School shoe range is launched at the beginning of July and features new versions of their hugely popular ‘Jennifer’ shoe with interchangeable straps. These shoes are available in leather and patent leather and come with a small chiffon bag containing two extra pairs of Velcro fastened straps, one with embroidery and the other with a small bow, (double stitched on by the way!) Oh and also a Free toy which little girls love.

We have a sneak preview of the new shoes below!

The new school shoes shoes will sell for £49.95 and are available in sizes 8 – 2½ (26-33). Of course the summer range is still selling through with a wide selection of heavily jewelled and sequinned printed canvas dolly shoes selling from £39.95 – the one below is Coccinella Dolly (Italian for beetle!), the best seller and retails for £44.95
