The magic of reading started for me all those years ago when I opened up a copy of Matilda. I had just learnt to read independently and was so pleased to be able to pick my own book from the bookshop, but I didn’t realise that it was a whole new magical world opening up to me from that point. I started reading the first few pages and suddenly I was sucked in to this whole new magical world, one I could see vividly in my head from just the words on the page. Nowadays, my children have this huge digital world surrounding them and have way more activities at their fingertips than I ever did, which is why I think it’s so important to remember the magic of an actual book. Nothing else compares in my eyes.
McDonald’s clearly must realise just how magical Roald Dahl is too, as from 13th September 2017 for five weeks only they have an exclusive series of books – featuring his fantastical characters, with one book included in each Happy Meal box. There are 8 different books including Amazing Matilda, Rotsome Giants, Mischievous Chocolate Factory Children, Marvellous Miss Honey, Fantabulous BFG, Wonderful Mr Willy Wonka, Lucky Charlie Bucket and Brave Little Sophie.
This Happy Readers campaign is so lovely, as a Roald Dahl fan myself it’s been great to read the books with the children and discuss them together. The same beautiful Quentin Blake illustrations still hold the same magic they did all those years ago for me too.
But that’s not all, it’s not just a reading book, there is activities and stickers in each book to complete too so will be sure to convince even the most reluctant readers that there is magic to be had inside a book.
Celebrity Dad, Peter Andre has even been checking out the books with his own children…
So what are you waiting for? Treat your kids to a McDonald’s Happy Meal, and they have an extra treat of a fantastical book and become part of #HappyReaders.
