LEGO is a massive part of our lives here, from little Emma who is mad about Duplo, right up to 13 year old Jordan who has used LEGO to help in so many ways…
First up, DUPLO. This is the beginner stage, with the large bricks that easily connect together, they grow with your child…from those first moments of success of getting two blocks to connect…
Right up to learning to build a tower or even a castle…DUPLO has all the fun a toddler needs to help hand eye coordination.
Then comes those first LEGO sets, the ones that are not too complicated…ones that the parents actually enjoy more as they get to build most of it, before your child gets old enough to decide they no longer need your help…and you end up having to buy your own LEGO sets, just so you can get to play still.
Jordan was diagnosed at 5 with Autism and ADHD. He was a lively child who couldn’t sit still for a second. He couldn’t talk and communicate well….until he found LEGO. It probably sounds silly, but he took to LEGO like a duck takes to water…all from that first box of LEGO my aunt had bought him for Christmas. The first time that box of LEGO was opened, he sat still and constructed a tower, I couldn’t believe he had sat still for long enough…
Over time the school quickly realised that LEGO is the key to helping Jordan to achieve, so various reward charts and lessons have been adapted with a LEGO theme, that’s one of the great things about LEGO, it can be anything you want it to be. Even now at 13 years old, it is written in his Statement of Special Educational Needs, that LEGO is his interests and that a mini figure in his pencil case is his comfort. As rewards for good behaviour he gets, yes you guessed it, LEGO. Jordan’s collection has grown rapidly over the past few years, but it seems you can never have enough as there is always something else to be built.
In 2014 we had an amazing opportunity where we had Ikea make over Jordan’s room for him, again the main focus was LEGO storage. They sure didn’t disappoint.
Then there is Brooke…my girly girl who was over the moon when LEGO Friends was released. She has been a massive fan ever since…from Elves to Frozen, Brooke loves creating her models as much as her brothers and sister.
So here we are in 2016 and LEGO is a massive part of our lives…have a watch of our YouTube video…
I’ve always loved lego (I actually worked at legoland while I was at uni!) and it looks like my son is following in my footsteps. We’re currently at the Duplo stage but I’m looking forward to moving onto the proper lego and seeing what he can build.
It’s amazing what families can build and make with Legos, we didn’t have any growing up but I hope to give my future kids what I didnt have.
Omg the lego storage looks amazing! We too love lego but keeping it organised and not getting it stuck in my feet haha is a daily challenge i end up wanting to hide it lol. My boys have bunk beds and the shelves look fab! xxxx
I’m impressed with how organised your lego storage is! I wish my daughter’s was the same. She’s 5 now and still plays with her Duple. We haven’t bought her any of the smaller lego pieces yet, because we thought she wasn’t interested. But lately, she’s been asking for them! Too bad Christmas is way too far, maybe for her birthday 🙂 x
We love Lego too!! My son’s room is filled with made up figures, we keep having to add more shelves to store it all, he wont choose between them!! My daughter has just recently discovered Lego Friends, I love the quirky, unique colours that they have in the sets. And my baby girl got her first set of Duplo for Christmas – a present for her to grow into I think!! Love your storage ideas xxx
It’s amazing how toys can have a positive effect on people. It’s great what it’s done for your son. My daughter loves the duplo. She’s still too young for main lego yet but I’m sure she’ll love it x
My son has loads of Harry Potter lego in his room but I have to admit that I probably love it more than him! I’d dearly love to have all the bits of the castle one day. We have a box of loads of different sets but I miss just having bricks – its hard to make something meaningful when you can’t really see the wood for the trees as it were! I’m always tempted to just start again!
I agree toys really do have a positive effect on children. I used to love playing with lego when I was younger and it was great to stretch my logic and cognitive skills.
Wow you have a lot of lego in your house! It is a great toy for encouraging imaginative play
Addison would literally die in your house, her whole Birthday list is Lego, from Frozen, Elves, Friends to basic bricks. xx
