The Christmas holidays can be a magical time for your kids. However, it can also be a very stressful time for you. Trying to find ways to keep them entertained in the lead up to Christmas and during the extended holidays can be a nightmare. If you’re running low on ideas and are dreading the impending time off then below you’ll discover some of the most unusual ways to keep them entertained.
1. Create your own wrapping paper
This unique idea will keep your kids focused, entertained and excited before Christmas. As featured on BuzzFeed, set aside some presents to wrap with blank white paper. Once you’ve wrapped them, stick some crayons or coloured pencils onto the top of the present and write ‘Colour Me’ on part of the paper. Then give them to your kids to decorate however they like. They will enjoy creating their own wrapping paper almost as much as they will enjoy opening it on Christmas day.
Now obviously this idea will only work for children who know Santa Claus doesn’t exist. However, you may be able to get away with it if you say something along the lines of, ‘Santa dropped some presents off early as he didn’t have time to decorate all of the presents in time and he needed help’. They will be so excited to help Santa they’ll pay extra attention to their decorating skills.
2. Educational apps
Smartphones and tablets provide a brilliant distraction. There are plenty of entertaining apps your kids can learn from over the holidays. If you don’t want to give them your phone, why not buy a broken iPhone? They are inexpensive and if you send it off to a cheap repair store such as www.lovefone.co.uk/, you’d be surprised just how affordable they are.
3. Ask your kids to put on a show
A lot of kids love entertaining and showing what they can do. Encourage your kids to put on some type of show for you. They can have a day, or even a couple of days if you want to stretch it out, to prepare their act. It could a dancing, singing, magic or any other talent show. They will be so excited preparing that it will give you hours of peace.
4. Park and hot chocolate
Make a trip to the park even more enjoyable with a flask of hot chocolate. It may be winter but there are bound to be dry days. Wrap up nice and toasty and enjoy the great outdoors. The hot chocolate will keep you warm and surely go down well with the kids.
5. Encourage your kids to create a new game
Bring out their creative side by encouraging them to create a game that you can play the day after. They can be as creative as they like. You never know, you might find you really enjoy their made up game and you could play it year after year.
These are just five great ways to keep your kids entertained. The Christmas holidays don’t have to be a nightmare.
You’ve got to include baking in this list! I love baking with the kids at Christmas (although it can get *very* messy!!)
