Museums can be boring, and as a child I have fond memories of some fantastic museums, but also I know there was many that I never actually appreciated enough. I have been thinking for a while that they need to be brought to life, and made appealing to children, but sometimes that just isn’t enough.

So when Gamar invited me down to the British Museum, I would of had a battle on my hands normally. Although my 11 year old has been studying Ancient Egypt and Rome at school and was interested to have a look, my 9 year old daughter holds little interest for such things. But when we arrived, the ‘stones’ and the ‘statues’, where brought into reality with the help of Gamar.

Gamar is an app that you can download at home, onto your tablets or smartphones. You can then take it with you, and it talks you through a story, a mission and suddenly all that history is brought to life in front of your eyes. As you find the items mentioned in the app, you hold your device in front of it, and it recognises it and brings it to life.  The kids loved using it, they really took notice of the objects in front of them….and now those ancient roman statues are actual people, they know who they are, what they done and hopefully this information will help them at school too.

At the moment, this is only available for the British Museum, but with free entry and lots to look at, this is a great idea for a day out to keep the small people busy.

Visitors to the Parthenon Sculptures gallery in the British Museum will be able to play the ‘A Gift for Athena’ game which enables visitors to explore the history and story of exhibits through interactive games. The development of the app was supported by Samsung and can also be used by primary schools and family visitors to the Samsung Digital Discovery Centre onsite.

Seeing first hand how the children were able to learn so much more, I wouldn’t hesitate in downloading it, or even encouraging the schools to use it. The good news is Gamar hope to expand their locations, so watch this space and hopefully we will have lots more exciting days out and interactive learning to come! Check out www.gamar.com for more details, or download from your app store.

We were invited to the launch of Gamar, all thoughts are my own.
