A home spa day (or evening) is the perfect way for mother and daughter to spend time together. Ideal for birthdays, Mother’s Day or for getting into the festive spirit, a home spa day gives the opportunity to relax and pamper yourself in comfortable surroundings, without spending a fortune on expensive spa treatments. Whether the daughter is a teen, a tween or a fully-fledged adult, it’s a great way to bond and have fun. We take a look at some body and skin pampering ideas.
Get Prepared
Any home spa day needs a bit of preparation. Make sure you have all the basic beauty products to hand, such as cleaning wipes, cotton wool and nail polish remover, as well as some more glamorous products, such as facial masks, facial oil, body oil and nail polish. Arrange them all in a place that is easily accessible and don’t forget about towels and face cloths either.
You may also want to do a quick clean up beforehand, making the living room and bathroom clean and comfortable. Light some candles for a peaceful ambience and pick some music that both of you will find relaxing and enjoy. You could also scatter some flower petals around and fluff up some comfy cushions. Add some healthy refreshments, such as veggies and dips, to snack on between treatments.
Face Masks
Face masks are a great way to pamper ourselves while paying attention to the face’s delicate skin. Depending on age, it’s likely that mother and daughter will have different skin types. Mum might prefer a richer, more nourishing face mask to soothe and moisturise dry skin, while daughter may be more prone to oily skin and prefer a mask to tighten and clean out pores.
Before applying the masks, fill two bowls with steaming water and use them as a facial steam, placing towels over your heads to lock in the moisture. This will open the pores and make the skin more receptive to treatment. Don’t forget to remove all make-up and cleanse beforehand.
Apply the mask and leave for as long as the instructions state, usually around ten minutes. Then simply wash off with lukewarm water and pat gently to dry. Your skin will be beautifully smooth and soft! Moisturise afterwards to rehydrate the skin – mum may want to apply rich facial oil, while teens and younger women might prefer a gentle, low-oil content moisturising lotion.
Hand and Foot Massages
Massage is a wonderful treatment to promote relaxation, and it has several other benefits too, such as helping to relieve anxiety and depression, easing pain, improving sleep, boosting immunity, encouraging circulation and relieving headaches. So take some time to give each other a gentle massage by using comforting hand or foot care products!
Start with soaking the hands or feet in a bowl of warm water (not too hot). You could add a hand or foot soak treatment to the water to add relaxing, circulation-boosting or skin moisturising properties. Then use a hand and cuticle scrub first and a rich hand cream later, massaging with the palms up, circling the palms with your thumb and massaging each finger too. You may then use a heel balm and foot butter for your feet.
Afterwards you could give each other manicures or pedicures – what better way to show off those pampered hands and feet than with a gorgeous polish?
