Top 5 Family Holiday Destinations in the Med

With its warm climate, clean sea, range of cuisine and outdoor activities, the Mediterranean is the ideal location for a family holiday. A Med getaway needn’t be expensive either – you can find great family-friendly deals from companies like Icelolly holidays. Encompassing a number of countries in southern Europe, choosing a place to stay in the Med region can seem overwhelming! A holiday in Majorca is the traditional choice for many families, though if you’re looking for something new, we’ve found 5 great alternatives.

5. Sardinia

Beautiful beaches and clear blue sea make Sardinia a hot spot for sun-worshipping families. This Italian island is located west of the mainland, and boasts over 1800km of coastline. It is the second largest island in the Med, though parts of the interior still retain an unspoilt, traditional charm. Kids will love snorkelling in the clear waters, whilst active families can enjoy activities like cycling, golf, tennis and horse riding. After a long day, parents can relax in one of many restaurants on the island, sampling traditional dishes and locally-produced wines.

4. Sete

This seaside town is known as ‘the Venice of Languedoc’ because of its many canals. The town fuses beaches with culture, so will suit the tastes of all family members. Being a fishing port, there are plenty of opportunities to try the freshest seafood at cafes and restaurants dotted throughout the town. Visit during late August to catch the Fete de St. Louis, during which residents take to boats on the canal and joust like knights of times gone by.

3. Alanya

Although dominated by resorts, there is still a great deal to see and do in this Turkish town. The beaches attract crowds for good reason – the sand is soft and golden and the waters clear. As such, this is a good swimming location for little ones. If you want to explore beyond the beaches, check out the old fortress district near the harbor with ruins, cafes and great views across the sea. Older teenagers will appreciate the lively atmosphere come sundown, with the town featuring a number of bars and clubs.

2. Santorini

This Greek island is in the Cyclades complex of volcanic land masses, and has some unique beaches and attractions. Kids will be fascinated by the volcano and nearby hot springs, where you can bathe in warm waters, thought to be great for the skin. The island is also known for its wines, and parents can enjoy visiting wineries and sampling the sweet offerings.

1. Costa Brava

This coastline is backed by the Pyrenees, meaning that if you get bored of lazing by the beach, you can reach stunning landscape and walks just a short drive away. Visit San Antonio beach in Calonge, with a large promenade where you can stroll, cycle or rollerblade with your kids whilst enjoying the sea views. For a quieter stretch of the Med head to Del Rec, an unspoilt beach close to L’Escala.
