It was a normal day, school runs had been done and we were at home carrying on as normal when there was a knock at the door. I opened the door and my husband stood there. ‘Are you ok?’ I asked, ‘I don’t feel too good’ he replied. I immediately started chanting in my head ‘Please don’t let him be sick, please don’t let him be sick’. I can deal with children’s vomit at a push, after all I am a mum and we get over our fears, but adult sick is wrong and turns my stomach just thinking about it. Now my husband isn’t one to make a fuss, so it took some questioning to find out what was wrong. ‘Is it your leg? Your head? Your throat?’ I asked. ‘My arm hurts, and my chest, I can’t breathe’. He started clutching his chest. I am a qualified first aider, so alarm bells rang . Now as I have said, he isn’t one to make a fuss, and hasn’t attended a doctors since he was a child, he is always keen to suffer it out rather than a quick trip to the doctors. Being a first aid my calm and sensible mode kicked in, I told him I was going to call an ambulance. When he didn’t complain, I knew it was serious. Just a few hours later and he was having a stent fitted in his heart after suffering a heart attack at the age of 36.
The day after the surgery he was transferred to a local hospital. Unfortunately this is where the problems started. We now know that when he was admitted, they had pulled up the wrong NHS record. He had the wrong medical file attached to his file. Even when I found out, they were not keen to do anything about it. There was a lot more to the story, and a letter received from the Chief Executive of the hospital admitted their failings. They admitted that he was served out of date food. They admitted that the staff had failed in their duty of care. Many people keep telling us that we should look into medical negligence claims, this is definitely something to be considered. I want to make sure that no one goes through the stress of what my husband did that weekend while in their care.
