How to feed a family of 4 for under £20 a week

Food prices are soaring and families are spending more and more on their food shopping a week.

There are a lot of ways in which you can save money and feed your family well, here are just a few:

  • Shop around. Just because you’ve been going to one supermarket for as long as you can remember, and are familiar with it, doesn’t mean that it’s the best or cheapest place to shop. Going to the same supermarket week on week can mean that you get into habits, don’t notice offers, and of course means that you don’t know how the prices compare to those of other supermarkets. Of course, if you go online there are more ways to compare, and you can go to a website such as Netvouchercodes.co.uk to make your shopping bill even cheaper.
  • Plan your meals. There are fantastic websites and books around with healthy, family-friendly meals that will save you hundreds over a year. By planning what you’ll eat and on which day, you save wasted food, and be able to even bulk buy foods and save money and time by making double the amount of a meal and freezing half.
  • Try going brand-free. This thought seems radical to many shoppers, but will save you a huge amount. Many supermarkets get their products from the same factories as brand names; which means that the product is not that dissimilar to one you may be more familiar with. Try an experiment and buy the value or cheaper brand and see if you family, or even you, notice the difference!
  • Make your own meals and lunches. Although this cost is not included in your weekly shopping total, it mounts up and before you know it, you’ve spent more on your lunches at work than on you weekly shop. Try making more food than you need for dinner and taking a portion to work the next day.
