Birthday parties can be quite expensive. Not only do you have to feed yourselves but half the neighbourhood too! But sometimes, a more down scaled party can be the best, all the focus is put back on the child whose birthday it is and there is a much more personal feeling to it.

To really cut down on costs, the first thing to think about is the food, if you are having family over, don’t be afraid to ask brothers sisters, aunties and uncles to contribute a dish or some finger food. Homemade birthday cakes are the best, all of your love goes into them and they are super personal. Everyone can make a cake and it’s much less expensive than having one made at a bakery.

Next is the theme, not every party has to have one but if you are planning a party for a child that really likes a specific theme, like pirates or football, it can be really fun and rewarding to surprise them with that theme. Homemade costumes are the cheapest and the best! You can even make your own decorations, being creative with what you have is the most cost effective method of  having a great fancy dress party.

Costumes can also be recycled for other fancy dress parties, such as for Christmas costumes check out Fancy Dress Ball for some options. Your best bet for costume ideas and materials is on the internet.
