There’s a desperate shortage of affordable homes for Londoners. People are priced out of home ownership and some are competing to rent run-down properties for astronomical prices. You only have to have a peek at the current prices while taking into account an average wage, it just doesn’t add up financially. This issue is affecting everyone from single Londoners pouring their income into rented properties, young families forced to uproot to move out of London in the search for cheaper properties and older parents whose children can’t afford to move out when they hit their 20s and 30s. I can sympathise with this entirely as a young couple ourselves, who struggled to get onto the property ladder. So what can be done about this problem that is affecting so many people? Surely this cannot continue, well the next Mayor will get new powers to fix our housing. Shelter believe that London’s housing deserves the same commitment as London’s transport. Shelter say ‘We’ve already got Transport for London. Now the Mayor must create Homes for London and fix London’s housing.’
