I LOVE driving, always have done, since before I could drive I was interested in cars and planning what car I would have when I passed my test. I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to be able to get behind the wheel, and I worked so hard on being able to get good enough to take my driving test. The feeling of being told you have passed your test is like no other, all those hours and hours of dedication (not to mention money spent on lessons) was all worth it.
So when I saw the Young Driver team at Blog On back in May, I knew I would love my 14 year old son to have a go at getting behind the wheel. I am under the theory that having a professional teach you to drive is far better than learning on private land with someone who has no experience or qualification. I was never taken out by my parents, and the reason being that they didn’t want me to learn their bad habits (not to mention, I think they would of killed me if I crashed their car…). So finding out that Jordan would be driving a brand new Vauxhall Corsa with dual controls was reassuring, having a fully trained instructor beside him I had absolutely no worries in letting him get straight into the drivers seat. The whole experience was on a specially selected track, with a team of Young Drivers cars all undertaking lessons in a safe environment for children aged 10-17.
Jordan was out for an hours lesson, and he said it flew by really quickly. He progressed from never ever even knowing what the pedals do in a car, to driving around the track and changing up a few gears! There is six different levels to work on, and Jordan started at level one, which is the basics of checking the car, pulling away safely, stopping and steering.
He really enjoyed it, and I can easily see how if you kept having lessons, you would be a much more competent driver when it came to having to undertake your test when you are 17. The instructor was lovely, Jordan has Autism and ADHD and the instructor was great communicating with him, he has taught him some valuable skills already, which hopefully Jordan will be able to use in the future.
The cost of these lessons are not cheap, but at £34.95 for half hour, or £ 64.95 for an hour, but this is an experience you can’t get everywhere. They make a great gift, and I am definitely booking my daughter in for some lessons when she is a little older. The confidence boost for Jordan has been phenomenal.
